Few estates are as closely associated with Châteauneuf-du-Pape as Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. The Brunier family has been making wine here for six generations, establishing a reputation for some of the Southern Rhône's most distinctive and age-worthy reds. The estate takes its name from an old optical telegraph station that once stood on the property, but it's the extraordinary vineyard beneath it that has made Vieux Télégraphe famous.
La Crau comes from the estate's historic vineyards on the celebrated La Crau plateau, where ancient vines grow among the enormous rounded stones known as galets roulés. Beneath them lies a complex mix of clay and limestone, giving the wines their distinctive combination of power, structure and freshness. Grenache takes the lead in this traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend, with Mourvèdre, Syrah and other local varieties contributing depth and complexity. The 2023 vintage offers generous fruit and plenty of Southern Rhône character, with the structure to develop beautifully over time.
Ripe black cherry, raspberry and dark plum mingle with wild thyme, lavender, cracked pepper and a touch of leather. The palate is broad and layered, with rich fruit, firm but refined tannins and a distinctly savoury, earthy quality. There's a wonderful tension between the wine's Mediterranean warmth and its underlying freshness, leading to a long, complex finish. Magnificent with slow-roasted lamb, duck confit, grilled meats or a hearty Provençal stew. A benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape that deserves a place in any serious Rhône collection.
