Grapes: 100% Chardonnay
Domaine Etienne Sauzet is one of the benchmark names of Puligny-Montrachet, with a history stretching back to the early 20th century. Today, Emilie Boudot and Benoît Riffault are at the helm, continuing the domaine’s focus on Chardonnay while pushing its farming in an increasingly thoughtful direction. The wines have a wonderful ability to combine Puligny’s elegance with enough substance to make them genuinely compelling at the table.
La Garenne sits high on the slope above Puligny, and Sauzet’s 2022 comes from a parcel that the domaine itself farms and harvests. The vines are over 25 years old, with only a modest amount of new oak used during élevage, enough to build texture without making the barrel the story.
This is beautifully poised white Burgundy: citrus and crisp orchard fruit at first, opening into something rounder and more savory with time in the glass. There’s a gentle creaminess through the middle before a firmer, mineral finish brings everything back into focus. Elegant now, but with the structure to reward a few years in the cellar. Try it with scallops, turbot, lobster or roast chicken.
