Jean-Marc Roulot is one of the great names of Meursault, although his wines have never been quite what you might expect from a village famous for rich, buttery Chardonnay. Precision, freshness and an almost obsessive attention to detail are the hallmarks of the domaine, where even the village-level wines are treated with the care usually reserved for Grand Crus. Les Vireuils is a wonderful example of why Roulot has such a devoted following.
The vineyard sits above the village of Meursault, where its elevated position and limestone-rich soils help Chardonnay retain a wonderfully lively character. The 2023 brings a little extra generosity from the warmer growing season, while Roulot's carefully judged use of oak adds texture without stealing the spotlight. There's real substance here, but the wine never loses its sense of energy or precision.
Lemon, crisp pear and green apple lead into white flowers, toasted almond and a subtle hint of spice. The palate has a lovely silky quality, with just enough richness to remind you that you're drinking Meursault, before bright acidity and a distinctly stony finish bring everything into focus. Beautifully balanced and likely to become even more interesting with a few years in the cellar. Try it with scallops, roast turbot, lobster or chicken with morels.
