Grapes: 100% Savagnin
Melting Potes is a wonderfully off-piste project from three friends in the Mâconnais: Frantz Chagnoleau, Nicolas Maillet and Julien Boisseau. Rather than another Chardonnay, they planted a tiny amount of Savagnin, a grape much more closely associated with the Jura, to see what it could do on the limestone soils of southern Burgundy. The name is part of the fun: "potes" is French slang for friends.
Because Savagnin isn’t part of the traditional Mâcon appellations, the wine is bottled simply as Vin de France. The project covers only around half a hectare spread between the three growers, making this a decidedly small-production curiosity.
There’s a lovely combination of freshness and texture here. Pear, quince and white peach sit alongside citrus peel, flowers and a slightly herbal edge, while Savagnin’s naturally bright acidity gives the wine plenty of energy. The finish is dry, stony and gently saline. Definitely one for the curious Chardonnay drinker; try it with Comté, roast chicken, grilled trout or anything involving mushrooms.
