Grapes: 100% Chardonnay
Alexandre Chartogne has become one of the most exciting names in grower Champagne by being relentlessly curious about where his wines come from. While much of his work explores the vineyards around his home in Merfy, Hors Série gives him the chance to play somewhere else entirely. For the 2022, that means Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Avize , serious Côte des Blancs territory.
This is a tiny-production Champagne with a decidedly vinous personality. The wine sees wood during its élevage and is bottled Extra Brut, allowing the character of the Chardonnay to come through without much sweetness softening the edges.
There’s plenty happening in the glass: lemon and ripe orchard fruit at first, then toasted almond, subtle spice and a lovely chalky quality underneath. It has some weight and richness, but also the freshness to keep everything beautifully in check, finishing dry, long and mineral. Definitely one for the dinner table; lobster, scallops, roast turbot or anything involving brown butter would do very nicely.

- For returns of wines which are corked, please re-seal after tasting and return us the (nearly) full bottle. We cannot exchange if the bottle has been consumed.
