Grapes: 100% Chardonnay
Domaine Larue is based in Saint-Aubin, but some of its most compelling vineyards sit just over the hill in Puligny-Montrachet. The family farms less than a hectare of La Garenne, a Premier Cru high on the slope above the village. Their vines here date from 1946 through 1975, giving them unusually mature material from one of Puligny’s cooler, more elevated sites.
The 2020 was raised for 18 months, giving this old-vine Chardonnay plenty of time to develop without losing the precision that makes Puligny so distinctive. Oak plays a role, but this isn’t a wine about wood or richness for richness’ sake; there’s a lovely tension between the generosity of the vintage and the naturally restrained character of the site.
Lemon, pear and crisp apple lead into white flowers, toasted almond and a subtle savory note. There’s real depth through the middle, followed by a firmer, mineral edge that gives the wine shape and carries the finish. Already drinking beautifully, but with plenty of life ahead. One for lobster, scallops, roast turbot or a very good roast chicken.
