Grapes: Zinfandel-led red blend with Petite Sirah and Syrah
Dave Phinney has always had a knack for making wines with personality, andĀ 8 Years in the Desert might have the best story of the lot. The name refers to the eight years Phinney spent away from making Zinfandel after selling The Prisoner, making this bottle both a return to an old favorite and a reminder of the bold California style that first made his name.
Zinfandel forms the heart of the 2024, with Petite Sirah and Syrah bringing extra depth and structure. This is very much Orin Swift territory: ripe fruit, generous proportions and oak playing a supporting role, all wrapped up in one of the most recognizable packages on the shelf.
Blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum come first, followed by dark chocolate, baking spice and a little pepper. It's rich and full-bodied, but there's enough freshness to stop all that fruit becoming heavy, with smooth tannins carrying into a long, warming finish. One for burgers off the grill, barbecue ribs, or a big plate of slow-cooked short ribs.
