Grapes: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Cabernet Franc
Sassicaia means “the place of many stones,” and refers to the region’s gravel soil. All the vineyards located in different altitudes and exposures benefit from extetensive sun and maritime breezes. Grapes are handpicked, destemmed and crushed before fermenting with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in French oak barriques, then refined in bottle before release. Sassicaia’s success prompted the Italian government to grant the wine its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, beginning with the 1994 vintage.
The 2022 is complex on the nose with fresh, minty lavender hints but also citrus notes mixed with sweet spices. Although already drinking well at a young age, after 4/5 years of aging in bottle, it will have the maturity and richness that characterize this vintage.
Per James Suckling; "Plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas follow through to a medium to full body with graphite, sandalwood, red currants and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary. The tannins are chewy but polished in texture. This is a Sassicaia that needs three or four years of bottle age to come together and soften. A structured wine for the cellar. Try after 2029."
